Everyone experiences a time when things do not go according to plan in their business or career journey. While it may be tempting to hold on to negative feelings for longer than necessary, here are some pointers on how to bounce back gracefully, and keep moving forward.

 Redefine your definition of failure.

Mentally view the failure as your “initial attempt,” your “good first (or 9th) try”. Focus on aspects of the experience that were successful, and more importantly, those that weren’t. Temporary setbacks are the very best learning tools and allow you to analyze what you will do differently going forward.

Realize you are not alone.

Ask anyone if they have ever made a professional mistake, and they will almost always answer in the affirmative. Many who are successful have a common thread…they managed to turn failure into a launch pad for success. It often takes many attempts at something before it can be claimed as an “overnight” success.

Accept responsibility.

Instead of looking for an excuse, or for someone else to blame, own your mistakes and take full responsibility for the outcome. Verbalize your feelings, ask for help if necessary or try a different strategy.

Respect the lesson.

It’s been said that with every endeavour there are only two possible outcomes: success or education. Embrace the priceless lessons, stay focused and give it another try! Quitters simply don’t win.
